“Il Centro” and Abruzzo Connections: A New Bridge to Abruzzese Communities Worldwide

With 1.27 million residents, the Abruzzo region has a population that is less than half that of the city of Rome alone. Even so, Abruzzo has its own daily newspaper, Il Centro, which reaches 217,000 readers a day and is one of Italy’s most widely read and popular newspapers.

After 40 years, however, Il Centro’s regional circulation has reached maturity. Future growth can therefore come from abroad, where more than one million potential readers of Abruzzese origin live, many of whom follow initiatives organized by Italea Abruzzo.

One advantage Il Centro offers readers abroad is that, under the direction of Luca Telese and managing editor Domenico Ranieri, its journalists provide national, international, and local news through four editions, one for each province: L’Aquila, Pescara, Chieti, and Teramo.

Following the launch in April 2025 of the weekly column “Le Storie di Dom” by journalist Dom Serafini — who is based in New York City and originally from Giulianova, in the province of Teramo — Il Centro introduced the “Abruzzesi nel Mondo” program through a dedicated section of its website, underscoring the importance of Abruzzese communities abroad.

The new digital section has three goals: to promote Abruzzese talent abroad within the region through the Monday column “Le Storie di Dom”; to open a dialogue with Abruzzese communities abroad through a space featuring news generated by those communities themselves; and to provide practical support — particularly with Italian bureaucracy — to people interested in buying property in Abruzzo or moving to the region.

This effort can now connect with Abruzzo Connections, the trilingual digital platform created as part of the CRAM project “Radici che Uniscono”, promoted by the Association of Abruzzese People in Paraguay with Italea Abruzzo serving as the local liaison.

The platform connects stories, communities, and places of origin, giving lasting visibility to contributions from Abruzzese communities around the world while also opening them to contemporary Abruzzo, its talent, businesses, and local know-how.

The connection with Il Centro’s “Abruzzesi nel Mondo” section can therefore create a two-way bridge between an authoritative editorial voice in Abruzzo and an international platform available in Italian, English, and Spanish.

As the editor of the international television trade publication VideoAge and a correspondent for Il Centro, Serafini is able to reach Abruzzese communities around the world. Through Italea Abruzzo and Il Centro’s new digital section, Abruzzese people living abroad can now contact him directly when they are seeking a closer connection with their region of origin.
