Castelli: ceramics as living know-how

Clay, a shape, a paintbrush. In Castelli, Abruzzese identity takes form in objects that hold knowledge, gestures, and imagination. Ceramics are heritage to explore and a craft that continues in today’s workshops.

Castelli and Abruzzese know-how

At the foot of the Gran Sasso, in the province of Teramo, Castelli is one of the places where Abruzzese know-how becomes most recognizable. Its ceramic tradition connects the village to a history of making, decorating, and passing on a craft across the centuries.

A plate or a vase tells more than its function: it carries a way of looking, choosing colors, and shaping matter. For anyone seeking a connection with Abruzzo, an object can also open a path toward the territory and the people who live there.

From clay to decoration

Preparing clay, shaping, glazing, decorating, and firing: ceramics emerge from a sequence of processes in which every step requires care. In maiolica, the glazed surface receives color and design; shapes, brushstrokes, and firings reveal knowledge that extends beyond the finished object.

The Museo delle Ceramiche di Castelli preserves works that trace different periods of this production. The maiolica ceiling of the church of San Donato shows how ceramics also belong to the memory of places. Both offer starting points for understanding the relationship between artistic heritage and the culture of work.

Knowledge that continues in the workshop

Tradition stays alive when people practice, teach, and interpret it. In Castelli’s workshops, the relationship between matter, shapes, and decoration continues through the work of contemporary artisans: observing a gesture, repeating it, and refining a technique also means passing on knowledge.

Continuity does not mean standing still. References to tradition coexist with personal approaches, everyday objects, and new decorative choices. Through this dialogue, heritage becomes contemporary productive culture.

From the territorial story to an encounter

Abruzzo Connections tells the story of Castelli as part of Abruzzo’s heritage and know-how. MAVIVO Experience provides access to the profiles of contemporary workshops and useful information for exploring a connection with the people who make ceramics.

The Castelli Ceramics journey within Abruzzo Roots brings these workshops together in one place. A published profile does not mean a visit is already bookable: arrangements, opening times, and availability need to be confirmed through MAVIVO and the individual workshops.
